The Roll Dance

Mise-en-scene

Costume -

Charlie Chaplin

  • smart black and white suit
  • bow tie
  • neat hair
  • moustaches
from this custom we can gather how much Charlie is trying to impress the other, he is neat and tidy something that differs from his normal outfit showing the importance of that night to him

The 4 Girls -
  • all wearing dresses
  • curled, tidy hair
  • party hats on
we know this is a dream charley is seeing and not reality therefor we are seeing the characters through his eyes. by making them pretty and well dressed it echoes the way Charlie sees them.

Props -

  • candles
  • plates and cutrally
  • fork and roll
  • Christmas tress
These props show how much Charlie is trying  to impress the other. as well as this it also creates a happy, party atmosphere. the candles signify the time passing as when he wakes up from the dream they have melted making the audience feel sympathetic as he has waited a long time for them.

Character expression -

Charlie Chaplin

at first Charlie is clearly happy, he's talking to his guests and laughing. although this is in his dream when he wakes up and realises it wasn't reality he is sad and depressed showing how dissapointed  he is that they arn't actually there.

Setting -

firstly the scene takes place in the log cabin it is dark and dismal.

Lighting -

The main light source is the candles by using the candles it creates an intimate setting and focuses us on the characters rather than he background.

cinematography

camera shots/ angles-

Firstly it starts off with a wide shot, this establishes the setting as it allows us to see the setting and the table.
Then we see a close up, this is when he is doing the roll dance, by doing this it forces us to focus on Charlie.
The next shot is wide shot where we see an interaction with his love interest.
the last shot is a close up shot where we see Charlie upset due to his being alone.

sound-

there is only non diegetic sound during this scene.
