In the first scene we are introduced to the character of Charlie Chaplin, who is walking in the blizzard although we don't know here to. we also see another character is is near a tent and is celebrating.

Firstly Charlie is wearing man up, he is has a white place face and blackened eyes visibly and moustache on the character of Charlie Chaplin. This moustache is a key feature of Charlie and this allows people to point him out as not many people or characters look like him, also perhaps making him seem more unusual and weird to the audience straight away allowing them to think he is a comedic character. It also suggest that he is an old fashioned person. He is wearing an old torn suit, a smart hat, he has a walking stick and a bag with as it seems all of his possessions inside it, from this the audience can gather that he is trying to be a smart well put together person but as its torn and old looking the it could suggest that he has a lack of funds. He also has a bag with as it looks most of his possessions init  suggests that he is travelling but where he is going is not aware to the audience creating mystery. We also see another character who is dressed in a big fluffy coat that looks suitable to the climate in which he is in, this makes Chaplin character looked up prepared and unusual and he is wearing  a suit in a blizzard making him more comedic to the audience. lastly he does not have many props apart from picture of a compass, which he uses to navigate his way through the blizzard suggesting that he has a bad sense of direction and perhaps lost.

This scene is set in a snowy location In a blizzard. In order to get this cold effect the lighting used is white and striking empathising this cold weather as it is overpowering and therefor makes the audience feel cold as if they were there. There is no buildings in this scene apart from a tent which is owned by a man, showing this location is desolated and lifeless. As well as this this there is a sign that states " here lies Jim sourdough on this spot got lost in the snow - Friday 1898" showing where he is a dangerous place.

At the very start of this scene Chaplin is walking down a huge mountain and falls down it, showing he is not meant to be in the climate or not use to it, as we'll as this is has over dramatic movements that are exaggerated  showing his weird comedic side of Charlie Chaplin therefor the audience does not take him too seriously. We don't see much of the other character (the man next to the tent) but we see that he is celebrating as he is shouting with his hands up. Throughout there is many mid and long shots as it is introducing the setting and main character to the audience, as well as this there are a few close up shots of the map and the signs which allows the audience to read what Chaplin is looking at. There is no diegetic sound in this scene as it is a silent film, although there is non diegetic sound which is music that plays in the background.

In the second scene I have chosen Charlie enters a pub where it is packed full with people dancing and having fun, this is where he meets his love interest of other characters.

All of the women in this scene are dressed in dresses which are pretty and smart, they have natural make up and hair thats neatly done suggesting they are making an effort. All of the men are wearing smart suits an look well put together. They all contrast with Charlie, he is wearing his old suit which looks old and raggedy, and his shoes are torn up, one of these is a home made shoe. The contrast with custom between these characters makes Charlie seem like the outsider and alien to the other characters, from just his costume he is already different to the others making the viewer feel bad for him as he is segregated from the other. Charlie has a walking stick with him that is a key feature of Charlie Chaplin in my opinion, it makes him seem like an caricature and comedic. Another important prop is the pictures of his love interest, he find one of the floor which is ripped up, this is a key prop as this is one of the first times he sees her and keeps the photo under his pillow allowing the plot to carry on.  This location is set in a pub, the pub is wooden and looks like a log cabin, the pub is filled with people dancing and talking to each other, the lighting inside is bright but with warm tones to makes it seem warmer in the inside. This contrasts from the outside which is cold and is filled with white light order to emphasise how cold it is, it also contrast with Charles house as it is dark and alone.

There are many mid and close shots in this scene to allow the audience to register where the location is and whats happening, it also uses reaction shots, when we see Charlie chaplain love interest looking at something then we see what she’s looking at a man and not chalice this makes him seem even more alone making the viewer seem sympathetic towards him. Another important thing that Is used in this scene is movement, all of the local people are dancing and having fun with each other, creating a happy atmosphere, but Charlie Chaplin is standing by himself, this is where we see mid shot behind him to see that he is looking at everyone dancing, he awkwardly stand there and walks around uncomfortable like an outsider. Although his demeanour changes when his love interest asks him to go dancing, when she does this is turns more uplifting and clumsy showing his comedic side, such as when his trousers fall down. Showing two sides of Charlie one that is alone which we feel sorry from, and another that is funny and clumsy that uplifts the atmosphere.

The last scene I have chosen is where Charlie Chapin is setting the table and awaiting his guests although they never turn up and instead go to the pub.

All of the women are wearing similar dresses and makeup to the last scene although charlie is wearing  smart ironed suit showing he is making an effort to please his guest and he is still wearing his caricature makeup that makes us recognise him but he looks smarter then he usually does. There are many props in this scene, he lays the table which has plates, glass, cutlery, cracker and presents upon it, showing he is trying hard to make good night for his guests, this makes up feel bad for him as we later know they never turn up and all of his effort have gone to waist. The location is set between two places, Charlie chaplains house he is staying at and the dance hall and these locations are very different. The dance hall is packed with people dancing and talking to each other, there Is happy music and bright warm lighting showing the positive atmosphere of the place, whereas when it cuts to Charles house it is dark and badly lighted making it feel cold, he is by himself and alone awaiting guests that never turn up.

In the dance hall they are all holding hand singing a song having fun with each other, it then cuts back to Charlie chaplain who is sitting there sad and disappointed as he realised his guest wont turn up, this is different from his first movements that are optimistic and happy, excited for his guests to come to his house. The editing used in this scene is made for us to make us feel bad for Charlie. We see that Charlie is with his guests having fun, he is getting close to his love interest but then is cuts back to him sleeping, showing this was all a dream, this makes us feel bad for his as we’ve seen house excited he was for them to come round but instead he is left all alone on new years eve.
